Festive Ergonomic Tips to Avoid Holiday Strain

Dec 20, 2021

The added pressure to get things done around the holiday season can often put extra stress on your body that sometimes have painful repercussions like headaches and back, hip, knee, or neck pain. We’ve got a few simple tips to help you stay healthy and jolly throughout the holiday months.

Grab Some Elves

We often haul storage bins down from the attic, from the top of the closet, or drag them up the stairs by ourselves to get a jump on the seasonal decorating. But lifting heavy or awkwardly shaped items alone opens you up to straining your body or even dangerous slips and falls. Instead of risking weeks of recovery and costly doctors’ visits (not to mention a painful injury), ask a friend or family member to help you with these bigger tasks in order to stay extra safe.

Sweet Relief

If you find yourself standing in a single, standing position for long periods like when you’re prepping tasty gingerbread cookies in the kitchen, make sure you have ergonomic comfort underfoot. Slip-on your orthotic shoes or socks with extra arch support and consider adding an additional layer of padding with an anti-fatigue mat. We like the 67” x 23” AFS-TEX® XL Anti-Fatigue Mat because it’s extra-long.

Santa Seats

Sometimes we find ourselves spreading out on the floor when we’re holiday crafting or wrapping presents. But these tasks often take up more time than we anticipate, and our bodies quickly remind us that it’s not the most comfortable position. Also, if you’re sitting at the table writing out your holiday lists or addressing cards, static chairs can leave your body feeling out of whack. Avoid the stiff-body-bummers by opting for your ergonomic work chair over the floor or dining room table chair. If you don’t already have a work chair that you love, check out the Swopper active stool or the Sing work chair.

The Perfect Side Kick

If you frequently use your iPad or tablet to pull up recipes in the kitchen or to video chat with loved ones who are far away throughout the holiday season, a tablet holder could be the perfect addition to your routine. Select from a standard or XL tablet holder for your tabletop or wall-mounted tablet holder depending on what will help you maintain a proper ergonomic position.
