Our flagship ergonomic seating brand, Via Seating, is a proud US-based company that can be found surrounded by a high desert valley just east of Reno, in Sparks, Nevada. In fact, they jokingly say Reno is so close they can see Sparks.
Most people who work at Via Seating live nearby in several valley communities, collectively called the Truckee Meadows. It’s a valley that’s part of the western Great Basin and has breathtaking views of the Sierras on the west and the Virginia Range on the East. The Truckee River, for which it was named, flows through it.
This area is known for experiencing all four seasons – and the residents who are employed by Via Seating can often be found enjoying its great outdoors. In the summer there is mountain biking, boating on nearby Lake Tahoe, and trail hiking. Not to mention the plethora of sports in the winter.
Via Seating’s headquarters is a 100,000 square foot building where the ergonomic chair magic happens.
The facility hosts everything from engineering to testing, to customer support, building out each chair and sending it directly to you.
The production floor takes up 25% of HQ. And they work differently than most manufacturing houses –they look at their work holistically and have what they call ‘Value Streams.’ There is a Value Stream of 20-35 people assigned to work on each category of chairs. This way, the product doesn’t change hands from department to department and won’t get lost in the shuffle. This agile approach ensures that they are always adding value to their production process. Anything that isn’t adding value is eliminated.
For an even deeper dive behind the curtain (or ergonomic comfort foam seat cushion in this case), Adam Cilonis, Via Seating’s Vice President of Production and Order Management, walked me through the process. When you place an order on Ergify.com, you aren’t ordering an assembled chair that’s in a box sitting on a shelf, collecting dust somewhere in a warehouse. Adam’s team receives your order immediately and builds it, from start to finish, the very next day.
Depending on the type of chair you order, the appropriate Value Stream member will start by pulling the roll of fabric you selected off of the shelf. The Cutters cut the fabric and hand it off to the Sewers. They inspect it and then sewing begins. Once ready, the stitching is checked by someone on the Upholstery team and then the chair is upholstered and handed off to the Assemblers. Each role checks the quality of the one before them to ensure no defects can slip through. This process is so efficient, in total, it only takes 45-50 minutes to create each chair from scratch.
The only thing left to do is to clean, package and send the chair to its new owner. And, since they’re based in the US, that’s only 2-7 business days from the time you click submit on your order so you don’t have to wait to enjoy the benefits of sitting on a brand new, made-for-you, ergonomic chair.
